THE OBJECTIVE

To create a social hub for the client; who views cooking and entertaining as integral parts of his new retirement lifestyle.

HOW IT WAS ACHIEVED

All walls enclosing the cramped kitchen were removed creating a single, open area. To satisfy the need for a stylish eating space, a single-piece 13-foot eating bar, with integral waterfall gable was craned in through the balcony to the fourth-floor penthouse. It helps anchor the masculine aesthetic by its finish: the hand-packed, polished concrete, bagged with black grout, giving a distressed look that contrasts the adjacent white-composite counter. In addition, a built-in buffet-bar allows guests to help themselves without disturbing the chef’s work area. Result: a flexible culinary hub with the desired masculine ambiance.

KEY FEATURES

Visual continuity enhances the sense of spaciousness via the dark stained walnut, incorporated three times throughout the space. A single-piece 13-foot eating bar with diamond polished concrete bagged with black grout to give distressed look that contrast to adjacent white-composite counter) craned in through balcony to fourth-floor penthouse. Special city permitting required for Genie-lift access via public laneway. This is shown through the 5-inch wide-plank flooring, backside finish on the eating bar, and the barstool seats. The masculine aesthetic is maintained elsewhere in the kitchen through the presence of open shelving, darker tile and concrete countertop. However, to balance the darker elements, a white composite countertop was added, as well as chrome fixtures and appliances: creating masculine sophistication. Special city permitting was required for lift access to the 4th floor via public laneway.
