Before Construction: Understanding Your Home Design Package

31/07/2025 by TQ Construction

Understanding architectural drawings can be overwhelming for homeowners taking on a renovation or building a custom home. That’s why TQ Construction hosted a webinar talking about just that, entitled “Decoding Design Drawings”, aimed at simplifying the process and empowering clients to engage confidently with their project plans.

Here’s a practical overview of what homeowners need to know when reviewing design drawings.

What Are Design Drawings?

Design drawings are more than just technical illustrations — they are the communication blueprint between homeowner, designer, and builder. These documents capture the layout, dimensions, finishes, and functional elements of a project, and serve as the official plan to guide construction.

Being familiar with your drawings gives you more control over the process and helps ensure the final result matches your expectations.

Types of Drawings You’ll See

Several types of drawings typically appear in residential projects, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Floor Plans
A bird’s-eye view of the home’s layout showing walls, doors, windows, and room arrangements. Floor plans make it easier to visualize traffic flow and how spaces connect.
  • Elevations
Side views of the home’s exterior, including window and door placements, rooflines, and finishes. These help convey the aesthetic and symmetry of the home’s outward appearance.
  • Sections
Cross-sectional views that slice through the building vertically, revealing how the structure is built from the ground up — including floors, ceiling heights, and wall assemblies.
  • Detail Drawings
Zoomed-in views of specific components such as built-in shelving, staircases, or custom cabinetry. These provide a close-up of craftsmanship and structural details.

How to Read Symbols & Notations

Design drawings use a wide variety of standardized symbols and abbreviations. These may represent:

  • Electrical outlets and switches
  • Lighting fixtures and ceiling fans
  • Plumbing connections and appliances
  • Windows and doors with swing direction
  • HVAC vents and thermostats

Learning to identify these symbols helps you visualize how your home will function — from where lights will turn on to where your dishwasher will be installed.

Understanding Scale & Dimensions

Drawings are created to scale — a method that shrinks real-world dimensions down to fit on paper. For example, 1/4” on paper may represent 1 foot in reality. Reading the scale correctly is crucial for understanding how large – or small – each element actually is.

Pay close attention to dimension lines. These show precise measurements of walls, windows, countertops, and more — all of which are important when planning furniture placement and assessing room size.

Why Your Input Matters

Clients are encouraged to take an active role when reviewing their design drawings. Ask questions, seek clarification, and flag anything that doesn’t align with your vision. The earlier changes are made, the easier (and more affordable) they are to implement.

Clear communication at this stage builds trust, avoids misinterpretation, and keeps the project moving forward smoothly.
