Transitional Kitchen Addition in South Granville

This 1920’s craftsman bungalow is updated for transitional style with a french country kitchen addition

By displacing 40 square feet from the adjoining sideyard porch, this french country kitchen extension creates new found excitement in family gatherings and outdoor living. The achieve this, the dividing den wall is removed and the side-rear entrance is sealed off from the exterior. Double entry garden doors are added to the mastersuite and den to access a 180 sf terrace extension. The original kitchen sink and range are reoriented to the adjacent wall for good looks. This open concept solution greatly improves the dysfunctional, boxy space without relocating the existing staircase connecting upper and lower levels.

Key Features

The decor includes a farmhouse-style sink, royal velveteen upholstered  bar-stool chairs, chrome pulls, shaker style cabinetry and bell-esque lighting which retain it’s heritage ambiance. The openness is created by the new glass staircase railings which allows for a more open concept home, while the natural light to flow through the rooms. By design, upper cabinetry is found only on the built-in pantry wall beside cooktop. THE OBJECTIVE

To refresh this 1930’s home and maximize its potential as a more open, heritage inspired home, while introducing contemporary, open-concept design that allows aging-in-place. The restored heritage features allow for an updated feel and their age-in-place needs are met.

HOW IT WAS ACHIEVED

Through an addition, the kitchen was expanded and made more functional, while also providing a new deck in the rear of the home. To open up the space the staircase going to the upper floor was made semi-open with new glass railings and the walls around it were removed. Walls enclosing staircase to upper-floor removed. Exiting staircase replaced with unified, shop-made millwork with lower landing winders. Crown moulding, pendant lighting, farmhouse-style sink, chrome pulls on Shaker cabinetry give contemporary freshness while retaining heritage ambiance. Contemporary glass railings allow newly revealed view through dining, kitchen, family and lounge. Sight-lines are enhanced throughout this area and make the rooms go from isolated and boxy, to open and connected. This 180 square foot addition eliminates awkward nook and makes entire kitchen square to improve functionality.
