It’s summer in Vancouver and the outdoor living is easy!
Summer in Vancouver is beautiful! It feels as though it starts earlier each year. This is cause for celebration, as it allows close to half the year to enjoy our great outdoors! This is reason to make sure your outdoor living space, be it a patio, garden or backyard, is one where you love to spend time and entertain!
When designing the layout of your home be sure to plan for indoor-outdoor flow. To create an open feeling add a sliding or folding patio door, larger windows or a pass through. Most people enjoy having this entrance close to the indoor kitchen, as it benefits use of the space by improving accessibility to outdoor cooking and allowing for easier entertaining. There are also many materials that can be used indoors and outdoors; for instance having transition free flooring will improve visual continuity and make travel between the spaces effortless, increasing utilization of both areas.
In order to maximize the use of your patio, make it as welcoming and comfortable as the interior of your home. There are so many ways to make lounging in the warm weather more enjoyable; flame controlled fireplaces and even simple strings of patio lights can add an inviting feeling to your space. Electric heaters, such as those enjoyed on restaurant patios, make the space cozy for guests and are now affordable and available to homeowners. If you enjoy cooking outdoors, a great cooking station for barbecuing can be a very enjoyable addition, and in the least invest in a quality set of patio furniture that will withstand the elements to keep your Vancouver outdoor living space looking its best!

Put as much thought and planning into designing your outdoor area as you do indoors and you will end up with a space that you love. This will maximize your home’s square footage as it allows you to utilize the area as an additional living space for entertaining or simply relaxing. It’s a great excuse to spend more time outdoors and, if you keep it well maintained and staged, provides a great feature for resale value.
