These documents capture the layout, dimensions, finishes, and functional elements of a project, and serve as the official plan to guide construction.Being familiar with your drawings gives you more control over the process and helps ensure the final result matches your expectations.

Types of Drawings You’ll See

Several types of drawings typically appear in residential projects, each serving a specific purpose:

• Floor PlansA bird’s-eye view of the home’s layout showing walls, doors, windows, and room arrangements. Floor plans make it easier to visualize traffic flow and how spaces connect.
• ElevationsSide views of the home’s exterior, including window and door placements, rooflines, and finishes. These help convey the aesthetic and symmetry of the home’s outward appearance.

How to Read Symbols & Notations

Design drawings use a wide variety of standardized symbols and abbreviations. These may represent:

• Electrical outlets and switches
• Lighting fixtures and ceiling fans
• Plumbing connections and appliances
• Windows and doors with swing direction
• HVAC vents and thermostats

Learning to identify these symbols helps you visualize how your home will function — from where lights will turn on to where your dishwasher will be installed.

Understanding Scale & Dimensions

Drawings are created to scale — a method that shrinks real-world dimensions down to fit on paper. For example, 1/4” on paper may represent 1 foot in reality. Reading the scale correctly is crucial for understanding how large - or small - each element actually is.Pay close attention to dimension lines. These show precise measurements of walls, windows, countertops, and more — all of which are important when planning furniture placement and assessing room size.

Clients are encouraged to take an active role when reviewing their design drawings. Ask questions, seek clarification, and flag anything that doesn’t align with your vision.
