History
After graduating with honours from BC’s Carpentry Apprenticeship Program, Ralph Belisle and his new bride, Hélène, spent several years travelling and working around the globe. During their stay in Australia, Ralph witnessed what he called, “… a real push to dress up the old neighbourhood where we were staying. As an apprentice,” Ralph recalls, “I learned efficient, modular building practices. Suddenly I was in a situation where I had to adapt and apply those principles to the quirky, unpredictable buildings that were very old and, in some cases, falling apart.” From that point on, Ralph was smitten with a passion for renovation.
In 1985, once the Belisles arrived back home in Vancouver, Ralph placed an advertisement in a local newspaper for “top quality” carpentry ... and TQ was born. Ralph then proceeded to turn a lull in the carpentry industry at the time into a booming business, offering a wide variety of services from fixing broken stairs to adding on small extensions to Westside homes. Burnaby-based TQ Construction, consisting then of only Ralph, Hélène and a handful of trades subcontractors, was soon working regularly on projects throughout the GVRD, including the downtown core, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby and Delta.
Ralph and Hélène’s persistence and determination to succeed kept the business growing throughout years of hardship and industry slumps. In 1989, Ralph took on his first extensive renovation job in West Vancouver’s British Properties and made a decision to turn his company into a strategic Design/Build contracting firm, complete with in-house engineers, designers and highly-skilled carpenters. With a winning team all under the same roof, the company grew from a spontaneous venture into what it is today — one of the most successful, forward-thinking renovation companies in the Greater Vancouver area, with an award-winning, 24-year history of excellence in BC’s home renovation and construction industry.
