The task of preparing for a home renovation can seem like an ominous one, but with good planning between you and your renovator, you will prepare with a minimum of wasted effort.

You will have a list of question running through your head. How many of your things to be cleared out, and where are you going to put it all? What do you need to set aside for your continued use, and for how long? And exactly which rooms will be left untouched?

Furniture management may be a large task and a personal one. If you will be re-using your existing furniture, then off-site storage is the best answer. You could rent large storage bins which are brought to the property, loaded with your belongings and then removed to a secure facility. Another option is to use a public storage company.

I highly recommend that you not leave your furniture piled up in the garage or pushed into a corner. You may think this will save some time and money, but will put your furniture at risk of being damaged. Also, this can slow down the renovation if it is taking up work space, or has to be moved around during renovation. The work crews need space in order to work effectively.

Well, now there’s the million dollar question! And it depends who you ask. Here are the obvious choices that you may have heard about…

Bamboo flooring: made from a quickly renewable resource making it a “green floor” option. This product can be harvested in from 2-8 years as a rule.

Cork Flooring: to produce this product ONLY the bark is removed from the “Cork Oak” tree and it recovers in 5-8 years in most cases. This allows cork to be considered “renewable” and therefore an earth friendly flooring option.

100% wool quality carpets and rugs made with materials with nothing harmful used in its manufacture, and is 100% biodegradable , this become an eco friendly flooring option.

How about engineered wood floor as an eco friendly flooring option? Well many flooring manufacturers are saying why not? If you only have an 1/8″ or even 3/16″ or 1/4″ layer of the “slow growth” hard wood on top, and much faster growth more renewable and eco friendly lumber making the core and the backing, is that not conserving our resources? Is that not using “less” of our precious slow growth forests? You be the judge.

There are a tremendous amount of considerations for the consumer to think about when deciding what eco friendly flooring choice to make, we all must be conscious and try to responsibly support the companies who pay attention to our environment. Now it is up to you to take this info and use it to find a “balance”.

Scale that’s all that needs to be said about flooring! Bigger is better when it comes to tile and stone flooring. Larger pieces across any size room give a spacious, luxurious feel. The less busyness, grout lines, tile/stone edges, the better. The additional lines turn your floor into a grid pattern rather than a beautiful showpiece. Today’s manufacturers offer large varieties of tiles, in some cases imitating natural stone to near perfection. With these products you get the stone look without the maintenance. The other major trend in flooring is hardwood. Although this flooring choice has been around for many years, its massive comeback can be attributed to its beautiful appearance, the diverse selection available, and its ease of cleaning. The highest grade of carpet cannot attain the same level of cleanliness as a hardwood floor! My recommendation for flooring is stone/tile or hardwood, and the use of area rugs where needed.
